Inspirations and influences / Wpływy i inspiracje

You know that I was going to write about inspirations and influences. And here is the perfect piece and timing for talking about it. I already showed it to you earlier - over one year ago. I was going to take part in one show with this quilt but as I realized it wasn't a good choice for this show I stopped working on it. And now there's another show - this time it will go. It will be in June (8-9) in Berlin during Textile Art Berlin - as a small exhibition of Polish art quilters curated by Danka Kruszewska. I will follow my work so anybody in Berlin come and see us :)
Wspominałam, że chcę napisać o wpływach i inspiracjach. I oto mamy dobry przykład i okazję, żeby to wreszcie zrobić.
And now I'd like to tell you how this piece came to life. Because despite that it is just one year old its background is a bit deeper. It reaches to the beginnings of my interest in quilting. While reading through quilt history  I fell in love with one quilt. This one:
A teraz opowiem Wam całą genezę tej pracy, bo chociaż ma dopiero rok, to jej korzenie sięgają dość głęboko. Do samych początków mojego zainteresowania quiltem. W trakcie zgłębiania historii amerykańskiego quiltu, znalazłam jeden, w którym się zakochałam. O ten:
It is very well known quilt by Florence Peto, "Calico Garden" and it is my all time favorite. In my world it is just the best quilt of the world. Why? I don't know, I just LOVE it :) So I always wanted to make a quilt like this. Yes, I know there's a pattern for this quilt which I could buy and just sew this quilt. But this would be too easy (in fact too difficult - following a pattern isn't my cuppa). What I really wanted, was to make a quilt which would be same beautiful but mine. So I studied Florence's quilt for long hours searching for "secret formula". I even started my own version never finished. [ok, I'm not a dumb - I know how this quilt is made, just can't define what speaks to me so strongly].
After some years, when my interests moved toward Medieval art, it turned out that the most interesting part of it is in backgrounds. Especially those with flowers. Or rather thousands of them - millefleur. Forget Unicorns, the focal point is in flowers.
To bardzo znany quilt, autorstwa Florence Peto, "Calico Graden" i ja osobiście uważam go za najpiękniejszy quilt świata. Dlaczego?
A właściwie z tysiącami kwiatów - millefleur. Jednorożec? Gdzie tam, to kwiatki są najciekawsze.
As you can see, to combine Florence Peto's quilt and Medieval tapestries was easy :)
Yes, I know - the flowers are embroidered, not appliqued. Because it isn't my quilt yet. It is a small embroidery I started 3 years ago to see how this sort of millefleur may look.
It looked good so I framed it with fabric and started to think what (besides Unicorn) may look good on such a background. Yes, you guessed it.....
... a tree!
... drzewo!
Now it has some more leaves but is not finished yet. Looks like embroidery might be even more time consuming than quilting :) But the good thing is, that I liked the whole idea so much that I made a quilt based on it:
I really doubt if Florence would recognize her quilt in it. Not to mention Medieval tapestry masters. But they all are present in my "Tree of Knowledge". Come and see it in Berlin :) There will be also my old "Apothecary" and two other quilts, the whole set going well together.
Chodźcie i sami zobaczcie w Berlinie :) Będzie tam jeszcze mój stary "Aptekarz" i dwie inne prace, cały dobrze skomponowany zestaw.

I think this is one of your best blog posts - it shows how the seeds of an idea came to fruition and what speaks to you and how you adapt that to your own work. You know I love this stuff - one day I shall own one of your large pieces and that is a PROMISE to us both! xCathy
