Kupala Night / Noc Świętojańska

You guessed it right - the idea for "Kupala Night" was born immediately after I finished my "Three Graces of Spring" :)
Kupala Night is a Slavic celebration of ancient pagan origin marking the end of the summer solstice and
the beginning of the harvest (midsummer). The arrival of summer is celebrated on St. John’s Eve in Poland
and it is an interesting mix of pagan and Christian influences. It is a magical night so all my efforts went to
convey this magic with fabrics and threads (and some beads too).
nici, tkanin i odrobiny koralików.
The plants and herbs gathered on Kupala eve were believed that could protect one from the evil forces
of nature and even cure illnesses in humans and animals.
Bonfires are thought to be beneficial to lovers, so brave boys jump over the flames to secure good fortune
and ward off evil.
Mądrość ludowa zapewnia, że rośliny i zioła zebrane w tę noc mają moc szczególną - chronią przed
złem i leczą.
Young women make crowns from herbs and wild flowers and let them float away on lakes and rivers with
a burning candle on top. It is believed that the fate of the crown predicts the future of its maker. If it floats
steadily, or even better, if it is removed from the water by a sweetheart, she will be lucky in love.
Some Poles also venture into the woods in search of the mythical fern flower, which appears exclusively
in midsummer and can supposedly be found only by people of exceptional virtue. The flower is meant to
bring great wealth, but unfortunately botanists do not believe in its existence. In the old days, the hunt for fern
flowers was a socially acceptable pretext for unmarried pairs to go on a walk on they own (notice that
the storks return to Europe from Africa about 9 months after the summer solstice).
Kupala was believed to be the god of love and of the harvest and the personification of the earth’s fertility.
According to popular belief, it was the only night of the year when the earth revealed its secrets and the only
time when trees spoke and even moved and when witches gathered.
Noc Kupały to noc cudów i miłości. W tę jedną jedyną noc, Ziemia uchyla rąbka swoich tajemnic,
drzewa mówią, a czarownice czarują.
So you see now that I've had to pack a lot into this small textile piece. Hope that good karma of Kupala
made its way here too and will keep the evil off :)

W Świętojańską Noc tańczą panny w wiankach, chłopcy skaczą przez ogień, robaczki świętojańskie świecą najsilniej w godowym tańcu i kwitnie kwiat paproci. Tu, gdzie mieszkam, też... ale tę magię płynącą z twojego obrazka pamiętam jeszcze z dzieciństwa. Dziękuję za tyle pięknych wspomnień.
Wczoraj odbyłam jednoosobowy sabat przy ognisku. Niestety nie był tak magiczny jak twój.

Piękna opowieść. A obrazek taki romantyczny...
