The Textile Cuisine

Desperately trying to meet some deadlines I'm really happy when I manage to squeeze some little projects just for fun.  So here come the little fairies playing in the night garden. Oh well, I'm teasing you because in fact there are fairies on cards: Bardzo się cieszę, kiedy w napięty grafik terminów udaje mi się wcisnąć coś małego, ot tak  dla czystej przyjemności szycia. I tak się właśnie wcisnęły  małe wróżki bawiące się nocą w ogrodzie. No, troszkę to podkolorowałam, bo wróżki są osobno na kartkach: and  "Night in the garden" with just plants. a "Noc w ogrodzie" to tylko roślinki. But as garden seems rather magical one can see it as a perfect setting for little fairies, right? Ale ogród raczej baśniowy, więc dla wróżek wymarzony, prawda? And as I'm deeply into folklore right now (even wrote an article about traditional Polish folk textiles - go and read it on "Folklore Thursday" ), all the dots are connected :) A ja teraz mocn

 Last October my fellow artist Ania Sławińska and I decided to start a common project concerned with flowers. We kept it secret for some time but now we can unveil the whole story. So, the idea was to stitch a portrait of a bouquet of flowers. I asked our friend Basia to make the pretty bouquet for us and... she really went crazy with her creation :) W pażdzierniku wpadłyśmy z Anią Sławińską na pomysł wspólnego przedsięwzięcia szyciowego związanego z kwiatami. Trzymałyśmy to w tajemnicy, ale teraz już upubliczniamy. Pomysł polegał na tym, żebyśmy obie uszyły portret bukietu. Tego samego bukietu. O zrobienie modelu poprosiłam Basię i trzeba przyznać, że dziewczyna zaszalała :) I wanted our model to be made by someone else because I wanted it to be same difficult/easy for Ania and me to stitch it. Spring? You mean just one? Oh no, there are three of them: Wiosna? Ale jak, tylko jedna? No nie, u mnie są trzy:  Yes, "Three Graces of Spring" - the newest, hot of the needle artwork from me. Just in time for the last day of Winter. If you wonder why there are three Spring ladies don't ask me - I have no clue. The basic idea was to play more with merging and gardens. And it looked rather dull at the beginning (mind you, it was in January, with short days and rather poor daylight): Tak, "Trzy Wiosenne Gracje" - najnowsza praca, prosto spod igły. Akurat na ostatni dzień zimy. Nawet nie pytajcie dlaczego trzy - nie mam pojęcia. Chciałam po prostu jeszcze trochę popracować nad zagadnieniem przenikania w ogrodzie. One of ideas I wanted to develop in my art this year is "merging". I'm fascinated by the fact that what we see (literally or not) is usually the result of different elements merged so well that it is impossible to recognize them. But when we step back in time we can see the process  and suddenly all those elements are clearly seen and we are surprised by the diversity of them and the role they played. Sounds complicated? It's not so. If the lady on the picture above looks familiar you may remember another work of mine with similar lady: Jednym z pomysłów, nad którymi chciałabym trochę popracować w tym roku, jest "przenikanie". Frapująca jest dla mnie świadomość, że to, co widzimy (dosłownie i w przenośni) zazwyczaj jest rezultatem połączenia wielu bardzo różnych elementów, które stopniowo zmieszały się ze sobą w nową jakość. Once upon a time (in 2000 to be exact) a nice feature about Polish quilter has been published in "The Quilting Quarterly", the journal of American National Quilting Association. With the funny subtitle "A band of one". No, I didn't ever consider myself as the only quilter in Poland, I just didn't know any. And I put here these big pictures of this article not only to show you my early works I also want  you to read yourself what "quilting scene" in Poland looked like 16 years ago. For the first time in my life (except the childhood) I was dreaming of a real Winter. You know what I mean - white snow, a bit of frost, bright sun and crispy air. Unfortunately this dream didn't come true - it is one of the warmest Winters I can remember. So I'm very happy that I made it myself  - welcome to my Winterland! Po raz pierwszy w życiu (wyjąwszy dzieciństwo) marzyłam o prawdziwej zimie. Wiecie - śnieg, mróz, ostre słońce i trzeszczące powietrze. No cóż, to marzenie się nie spełniło - mamy chyba najcieplejszą zimę jaką pamiętam. Dlatego bardzo się cieszę, że sama sobie zrobiłam zimę - witajcie w Zimowej Krainie!
