The Textile Cuisine

Fancy a fish dish? You're welcome: The idea for fisherman's kitchen portrait arose long ago. It was percolating slowly on the back burner and now the time has come to express it in fabrics. I wanted it rather dark, in tones of browns and blues. Hand dyed antique linen and lace (aka fishing net) were the starting point setting the mood for the whole piece. Smoked fish and the basket of fishes were the obvious choices as well as the big pot with fish soup. I wasn't sure what window view I want but the scraps just lined up for the big sky and the sea. So what to put on the table? At first I wanted simple silver plates but the addition of fishes turned it into splendind feast. That's how we ended up on the fine dining in this humble fisherman's kitchen. I love making kitchen portraits. In the next post will show you more of them, the ones created through the time I was absent here. But of course I had to share my newest baby first, right? Bon appetit!

Yes, I know, you may be slightly mad at me for not posting for a long time and now posting too much stuff at once. But I hope that upcoming Holidays will give you some time to chew it all slowly :) It just goes without my control - when I started this serie of small artworks "Windows to the past" I had no clue I will end with the big one too. Wiem, wiem - możecie się troszkę denerwować, że długo się nie odzywam, a potem tyle rzeczy na raz. Ale idą Święta i na pewno znajdziecie czas, żeby sobie to wszystko powolutku przetrawić :) Ja po prostu nie mam nad tym kontroli - nie przypuszczałam, że po serii małych okienek "Windows to the past" będę musiała uszyć również jedno całkiem spore: And you bet it took some time to create :) I domyślacie się, że to chwilę mi zajęło :) But to be honest, it all started from ... the barn. Ale tak naprawdę, wszystko zaczęło się od... stodoły. And why the barn? Because I saw this picture : A dlaczego stodoła?

Let's state it up front - the big fan of stone gardens I am not. But sometimes things happen, not even asking if you are a fan. First, I went through this post about Alpine Garden in Wave Hill and liked the way author described the plants like a "miniature jewels". The idea was born: Zaznaczam na wstępie, że nie jestem wielką fanką skalniaków. Ale czasami rzeczy się zdarzają, nie pytając nawet czy jesteśmy ich fanami. Tak więc najpierw zdarzył się ten post o ogrodzie alpejskim w Wave Hill i bardzo mi się spodobało, jak autorka określiła skalne roślinki mianem małych klejnotów. Tak zrodził się pomysł: As if it wasn't enough, the next came the book. No, not about plants - about mothers-daughters relationship ( sorry - it's in Polish only ... yet?). I'm not a big fan of this sort of books either. What I like in this one is author's approach - instead of blaming her mother she is trying to learn on her mother's mistakes. Just in time for Easter but totally not Easter related :) Temat niby na czasie, ale z Wielkanocą nie ma nic wspólnego :) It also has nothing in common with ladies' party. It is just about the hens. Nie chodzi również o wieczór panieński (po angielsku "hen party"). Chodzi po prostu o kury. Hens love to party from time to time, right? Especially in Spring. One też lubią się czasem zabawić, prawda? Zwłaszcza wiosną. So let them have a ball! No to niech się bawią! This quilt is a side effect of my work on a nice order for many hens. I didn't suppose it can be so inspirational. But pssst..... now they have to sleep for awhile :) Ta praca powstała przy okazji pewnego miłego zamówienia na dużą ilość kur. Nie przypuszczałam, że będzie aż tak inspirujące. Ale cicho sza...... teraz muszą odespać :) Happy Easter everybody! Wesołej Wielkanocy wszystkim!

Here it is what I have on my desktop from some time now. Beautiful Alhambra Gardens taken by my dear friend, Agnieszka. I guess it inspired me subconsciously. And if you wonder if I draw my ideas - yes, sometimes I do: To zdjęcie mam na swoim pulpicie już od dłuższego czasu. So the other Perfume is ready. And this is another "ready to frame" piece which brings the question "how to frame it?". For me, framing is a perfect solution for small pieces. I like them mounted on passepartout or some other decorative sturdy cartoon. As I just went through one of the older small pieces of mine, I thought it may be good to show you how do I mount it. No to mamy drugie Perfumy. One też są "gotowe do oprawy", co często rodzi pytanie "jak to oprawić?". Osobiście uważam, że oprawa to świetne rozwiązanie dla małych form. Najczęsciej montuję je na passepartout albo jakims innym sztywnym, dekoracyjnym kartonie. A ponieważ ostatnio natknęłam się właśnie na swoją starą , małą pracę, postanowiłam pokazać Wam jak ja to montuję. The piece is 17 x 26 cm (with irregular shape!) and passepartout is slightly bigger - 21 x 30 cm.
