The Textile Cuisine

So I've got this old quilt of mine depicting falling Autumn leaves hanging in my bedroom. Personally I love it. I've used many colorful scraps I had at the time to make a background for delicate grey autumn leaves. I wanted the leaves to be almost invisible and I succeeded - which isn't all that good considering the amount of work put into cutting and appliqueing them. Mam taką starszą pracę ze spadającymi jesiennymi liśćmi wiszącą w sypialni. Bardzo ją kocham. Wykorzystałam w niej  mnóstwo kolorowych skrawków ulubionych tkanin jako tło dla delikatnych szarych liści. Chciałam, żeby te liście były prawie niewidoczne i udało mi się - tyle, że to trochę bez sensu, biorąc pod uwagę ilość pracy włożoną w ich wycięcie i naszycie. I even decided to add a fine black contour line but as for now I did it just with one leaf in the lower right corner. Mundane task. The shape of leaves is a real challenge for my patience but I still find it beautiful because of their lacy factor.

Yes, this time they are big and fat and grey. And they just sit and watch the spring coming. No tak, tym razem są duże, tłuste i szare. I tylko siedzą i wypatrują wiosny.  It is funny that when you start playing with the subject, the new ideas keep coming. And that's how another happy couple came to life: To naprawdę niesamowite, że jak się człowiek tak pochyli nad jakimś tematem, kolejne pomysły same przychodzą. I tak właśnie przyszła jeszcze jedna kurza parka: I've had this pretty vintage background fabric for years. But it wasn't until recently when the idea for some lovely folk art serie came to my mind. So it starts from the hen house but the real house is planned too :) Tę pasiastą, naprawdę starą, tkaninę mam już od wielu lat. Ale nie miałam na nią dobrego pomysłu aż do teraz, kiedy wyobraziłam sobie na niej całą folkową serię. You know that I was going to write about inspirations and influences. And here is the perfect piece and timing for talking about it. I already showed it to you earlier - over one year ago . I was going to take part in one show with this quilt but as I realized it wasn't a good choice for this show I stopped working on it. And now there's another show - this time it will go. It will be in June (8-9) in Berlin during Textile Art Berlin - as a small exhibition of Polish art quilters curated by Danka Kruszewska. I will follow my work so anybody in Berlin come and see us :) Wspominałam, że chcę napisać o wpływach i inspiracjach. I oto mamy dobry przykład i okazję, żeby to wreszcie zrobić. Widzieliście już kawałek tej pracy wcześniej - ponad rok temu . Chciałam ją zgłosić na pewną imprezę, ale ponieważ stwierdziłam, że jej charakter zupełnie tam nie pasuje, przestałam nad nią pracować. A teraz jest inna impreza i tam już ją wyślę. To będzie w czerwcu (8-9), w Berlinie, w ramach

Just popping in to wish you a Happy New Year! Wpadam tylko życząc wszystkim Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku! The work behind me is 12 (well, 13 to be honest) years old. Winter landscape in the mountains - it too was inspired by a trip. What's interesting, it is not a quilt. It's pure applique done on a stiff felt bought from Polish mountain people. Praca w tle ma już 12 (a właściwie 13) lat. Zima w górach - też inspirowana małą wycieczką. I nie jest to quilt. To aplikacja wykonana na góralskim filcu. This year is going to be filled with lots of work. So I'd better go to my current landscape to finish it soon. Ten rok zapowiada się pracowicie. To lepiej już pójdę do mojego obecnego pejzażu, żeby go wreszcie skończyć.

Yes, you guessed it (oh well, nobody even tried) - it is herring's salad with beets! Tak, zgadliście (no dobrze, nikt nawet nie próbował) - to sałatka śledziowa z burakami! So - the herrings, the beets (all sliced), some sauer cream (or yoghurt) and... voila! Ok, maybe not yet, some hard boiled eggs, potatos, pickled cucumber are needed too :) A więc - śledzie, buraki (wszystko pokrojone), trochę kwaśnej śmietany (albo jogurtu) i... gotowe! No dobrze, może jeszcze nie do końca, jakieś jajk0 na twardo, ziemniaki i kiszone ogórki też są potrzebne :) And the onion will come later. Now everything is appliqued and longs for some quilting! A cebula przyjdzie później. Na razie wszystko jest naaplikowane i czeka na pikowanie!

After few days of studying Benary's plate (not to mention looking at it for the whole December) this is what I came up with. Oto rezultat kilkudniowego studiowania buraczanej planszy Benary'ego (o patrzeniu na nią przez cały grudzień nawet nie wspominam). I decided for one big bulb with a crown of leaves and a variety of different types of beets in pieces. This allows me to show the idea of a beet in a very simple way. Zdecydowałam się na jedną dużą buraczaną bulwę z koroną liści i różne ich odmiany w przekrojach. Ot i cała "idea buraka" gotowa. As for now I appliqued the big bulb, parts of leaves and some pieces. Na razie naaplikowałam dużą bulwę, częściowo liście i niektóre plasterki. You think that the leaves look a bit strange? Not so "beetsy"? Just wait for the quilting... Myślicie, że te liście trochę dziwne? Niezbyt "buraczane"? Poczekajcie na pikowanie...
